About This Project

This stone house renovation transforms a former local-stone dwelling set in a preserved natural landscape. A slate roof, coursed masonry and brick window surrounds define its original architecture. The project retains and restores these elements, then adapts the house to contemporary use.

Outside, the existing volumes remain legible. As a result, each wing regains a coherent reading, where stone, brick and slate sit together without hierarchy. No extension, however, disturbs that balance.

Inside, by contrast, the transformation runs deeper. Large open, through-facing spaces replace the original partitions. Freed from the attic floor, the timber roof structure becomes the ordering element of the project. In addition, roof insulation leaves trusses and rafters exposed, revealing the full height of the volumes. Meanwhile, the kitchen and dining area gather around a central island on the ground floor. A mezzanine engages with the new timber staircase, while the restored fireplace anchors the living room against retained stone walls.

Restrained by intent, the contemporary interventions step back from the older materials. Pale surfaces, mineral floors and bespoke joinery form a discreet backdrop. Rooflights finally bring generous daylight into the heart of the house. This stone house renovation therefore relies less on addition than on revelation.
